A symbolic depiction of the biblical procession, rendered with the flattened forms and expressive colour typical of the Nabis movement.
Maurice Denis painted The Road to Calvary in 1889, a period when he was deeply involved with the Nabis group. This collective sought to move away from the objective representation of nature, favouring instead the expression of subjective emotion through simplified forms and flat areas of colour. The composition demonstrates the artist's early interest in decorative synthesis, where the narrative elements are subordinated to the overall arrangement of shapes and hues.
The scene depicts the biblical procession towards the crucifixion, yet the treatment is far from traditional. Denis employs a stark, almost silhouette-like approach for the figures in the foreground, creating a sense of mystery and detachment. The heavy, dark forms of the mourners contrast with the lighter, more ethereal background, where the cross is carried by a figure rendered in softer, warmer tones. The ground is dotted with small, yellow floral motifs, which provide a rhythmic, decorative quality to the lower portion of the canvas.
By reducing the figures to essential shapes, Denis invites the viewer to contemplate the spiritual weight of the subject rather than its historical or physical reality. The use of colour is non-naturalistic, serving to establish a mood of solemnity and quiet reflection. This work reflects the Nabis philosophy that a painting is essentially a flat surface covered with colours assembled in a particular order. It remains a clear example of the transition from late nineteenth-century academic traditions toward the more abstract concerns of modern art. The composition avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the interplay between the dark, imposing foreground and the pale, distant horizon, which suggests a space that is both physical and psychological.
