A dynamic Neoclassical ink and wash drawing by Felice Giani, depicting the biblical scene of King David in prayer before a sacrificial altar.
Felice Giani, a prominent Italian painter and decorator of the Neoclassical period, produced this dynamic study depicting the biblical narrative of King David. The composition centres on the altar, where smoke billows upwards to meet a descending angel, creating a vertical axis that balances the horizontal arrangement of the figures. Giani employs a fluid, calligraphic line quality, typical of his preparatory drawings, which allows for a sense of movement and urgency within the scene.
The foreground features King David in a posture of profound supplication, his crown cast aside on the ground, signifying his humility before the divine. To the right, attendants prepare the ritual vessels, while a crowd of onlookers gathers on the left, their expressions and gestures conveying awe and reverence. Giani uses brown wash to establish depth and volume, defining the architectural elements of the altar and the billowing smoke with varying degrees of transparency. The background remains relatively sparse, focusing the viewer's attention on the interaction between the human figures and the celestial intervention.
Giani was well-known for his work in Roman palaces, and his draughtsmanship often reflects the influence of antique sculpture and Renaissance masters. This drawing demonstrates his ability to organise complex narrative scenes with clarity and dramatic tension. The use of light and shadow, achieved through the application of wash, provides a sense of atmosphere that elevates the sketch beyond a mere study. It is a fine example of the Neoclassical interest in classical themes, rendered with the expressive freedom characteristic of Giani's personal style. The work remains a clear representation of his technical skill in ink and wash, capturing a moment of religious intensity through precise yet energetic mark-making.
