A Neo-Impressionist study of a woman at her mirror, rendered in the characteristic divisionist style of Théo van Rysselberghe.
Théo van Rysselberghe, a central figure in the Belgian Neo-Impressionist movement, produced this work in 1906. The painting depicts a woman seated before a mirror, captured in the act of adjusting her hair. The composition relies on the divisionist technique, where small, distinct dots of colour are applied to the canvas to create a luminous effect when viewed from a distance. The artist employs a scientific approach to optics, placing complementary colours side by side to generate a sense of light and movement.
The subject is viewed from behind, with her reflection visible in the mirror frame. This doubling of the figure adds a layer of psychological depth to the domestic scene. The scarlet ribbon in her hair provides a sharp chromatic contrast against the softer, cooler tones of the skin and the surrounding interior. Van Rysselberghe demonstrates a mastery of light, as the dots of paint suggest the texture of the fabric and the reflective surface of the glass. The background features a patterned textile, which is rendered with the same meticulous attention to colour theory as the figure herself.
This piece reflects the artist's transition from his earlier, more rigid adherence to Pointillism toward a freer, more expressive application of paint. The brushwork remains systematic, yet it possesses a fluidity that softens the contours of the body. By focusing on a private moment of grooming, the artist invites the viewer to observe a quiet, intimate space. The work remains a clear example of the technical rigour and aesthetic concerns that defined the Neo-Impressionist circle in the early twentieth century.
