Description
A bold Fauvist interpretation of the Seine at Chatou, featuring heavy brushwork and expressive colour by Maurice de Vlaminck.
Maurice de Vlaminck, a self-taught painter and key figure in the Fauvist movement, captured the banks of the Seine near his home in Chatou with characteristic intensity. This work displays the aggressive brushwork and non-naturalistic colour choices that defined his early career. Vlaminck often applied paint directly from the tube, creating thick, tactile surfaces that reject the smooth finish of traditional academic painting. The composition focuses on the structural weight of the bridge against the fluid, shifting surface of the water. Rather than seeking photographic accuracy, Vlaminck prioritised the emotional impact of the scene. The bridge is rendered in deep blues and shadows, contrasting with the stark, reflective whites of the river. The building on the left bank is constructed from blocks of red and dark pigment, grounding the scene while maintaining the raw, unrefined energy of the Fauvist aesthetic. During this period, Vlaminck was heavily influenced by the work of Vincent van Gogh, whose retrospective in 1901 left a lasting impression on the artist. This influence is visible in the rhythmic, swirling application of paint and the bold, expressive use of colour. The scene at Chatou was a frequent subject for Vlaminck, providing a familiar setting where he could experiment with the limits of colour theory and form. The result is a work that captures the atmosphere of the riverbank through a lens of subjective experience, favouring immediate visual sensation over descriptive detail. This print reproduces the heavy impasto and the specific chromatic choices of the original oil painting, allowing for a close examination of Vlaminck's technique.
