A woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicting the Seven Lucky Gods, showcasing the artist's blend of traditional Ukiyo-e techniques with expressive figures and dynamic composition.
This woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) depicts the Seven Lucky Gods, a popular theme in Japanese art and folklore. Yoshitoshi, a prominent figure in the late Edo and early Meiji periods, is recognised for his innovative approach to Ukiyo-e, blending traditional techniques with modern sensibilities. His work often explores historical and mythical subjects, marked by dramatic compositions and expressive figures. The print presents a lively gathering of the gods, each distinguished by their unique attributes and personalities. Daikokuten, with his mallet and rice bales, symbolises wealth; Bishamonten, in armour, represents dignity; Ebisu, with a fishing rod, signifies prosperity; and so on. The composition is dynamic, with the gods interacting amidst food and drink. Calligraphic inscriptions add to the visual complexity, while the delicate lines and muted colours are characteristic of traditional Japanese woodblock printing. The print offers a glimpse into Japanese beliefs and artistic practices of the time.
