An early Impressionist study by Grant Wood, featuring a solitary poplar tree rendered with warm, earthy tones and expressive brushwork.
The Shaking Poplar captures a moment of quiet observation, reflecting the early stylistic explorations of Grant Wood before he developed his signature precisionist approach. During this period, Wood experimented with the broken brushwork and atmospheric qualities associated with Impressionism. The composition focuses on a single, slightly bent tree positioned in the foreground, its branches reaching across the upper portion of the frame. The foliage is rendered with short, rhythmic strokes that suggest movement, evoking the title's reference to the tree reacting to a breeze.
The colour palette relies on warm, earthy tones. Ochre and golden hues dominate the field behind the tree, while the foreground and trunk are defined by deeper shades of brown and burnt sienna. This tonal consistency creates a sense of unity across the surface. The background remains indistinct, allowing the viewer to focus on the texture of the paint and the silhouette of the poplar. Unlike his later, highly controlled works, this piece demonstrates a looser, more spontaneous application of pigment.
Wood, born in Iowa, spent time in Europe during the 1920s, where he encountered various modern movements. This work reflects that exposure, showing a clear interest in how light interacts with natural forms. The lack of rigid outlines and the emphasis on painterly surfaces distinguish this from his later, more iconic depictions of the American Midwest. It provides a view into the artist's formative years, documenting his transition from traditional academic training toward a more personal, expressive style. The work remains a study in atmosphere and light, capturing the fleeting nature of a rural scene through a lens of quiet contemplation.
