A delicate 1874 etching by Charles-François Daubigny depicting a shepherd and shepherdess resting in a sun-dappled forest.
This etching by Charles-François Daubigny, dated 1874, captures a quiet moment within a wooded setting. Daubigny, a central figure of the Barbizon School, spent much of his career observing the French countryside. His approach to printmaking mirrors his painting practice, prioritising the atmospheric quality of light and the texture of the natural world over rigid detail.
The composition is anchored by a large, central tree that divides the frame, creating a sense of depth as the eye moves from the foreground figures into the receding woods. A shepherd and shepherdess are seated in the lower right, partially obscured by the foliage, while their flock grazes nearby. The artist uses varied line weights and cross-hatching to suggest the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy, a technique that demonstrates his mastery of the etching needle.
Daubigny was instrumental in the revival of etching as an expressive medium in the nineteenth century. Rather than using the process solely for reproductive purposes, he treated the copper plate as a site for direct, spontaneous observation. This work reflects his interest in the humble, everyday life of rural workers, a subject he returned to frequently throughout his career. The print conveys a sense of stillness, focusing on the relationship between the human figures and their environment. The interplay of shadow and light across the forest floor provides a tactile quality, inviting the viewer to consider the quietude of the scene. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow, Daubigny captures the transient nature of the afternoon sun, a hallmark of his later graphic work.
