A sombre lithograph by Ernst Barlach depicting a solitary shepherd and his flock under a turbulent sky, rendered with expressive, charcoal-like marks.
Ernst Barlach, a German sculptor and printmaker, produced this lithograph during a period when his work focused on the existential condition of the rural labourer. The composition features a solitary shepherd, draped in a heavy cloak, standing with his back to the viewer. His posture suggests a state of contemplation or weariness. A dog stands in the foreground, looking towards the flock that occupies the middle ground. The background consists of rolling hills and a turbulent, stormy sky, rendered with energetic, gestural marks that convey a sense of atmospheric pressure.
Barlach utilised the medium of lithography to achieve a charcoal-like texture, allowing for soft transitions between light and shadow. The heavy, dark lines of the shepherd's cloak contrast with the lighter, more fluid strokes used to define the clouds and the terrain. This work avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the weight and volume of the figures. The shepherd appears as a monumental presence within the environment, a common theme in Barlach's output, where human figures often seem burdened by their own physical existence or the harshness of their surroundings.
Unlike the more aggressive or distorted forms found in other Expressionist works of the early twentieth century, this print maintains a degree of naturalism. It captures a quiet, sombre moment rather than a dramatic event. The artist's signature is visible in the lower right corner, executed with the same loose, expressive hand seen throughout the image. This print offers a view into Barlach's interest in the intersection of human emotion and the natural world, presented through a monochromatic palette that emphasises form and mood over colour.
