A fine art print of calligraphic verse from the anthology The Silver World, created by the ukiyo-e master Kitagawa Utamaro.
This print originates from the kyoka (mad verse) anthology titled Gin sekai, or The Silver World, produced by the celebrated ukiyo-e master Kitagawa Utamaro. During the late eighteenth century, the publication of such illustrated poetry books became a refined pursuit among the literary circles of Edo. These works brought together poets and artists to create a harmonious union of text and image, often focusing on the seasonal transitions that defined the Japanese aesthetic sensibility.
The page displays a masterful example of kana calligraphy, executed with fluid, rhythmic brushwork. The characters flow vertically down the page, their varying thickness and spacing creating a visual cadence that mirrors the poetic structure of the verses. Utamaro, while better known for his portraits of women, demonstrated a high level of technical control in his book illustrations. The composition is contained within a simple, clean border, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the elegance of the script. The paper retains a soft, aged tone, characteristic of the washi paper used in Edo-period printing, which provides a subtle texture to the background.
In the context of Japanese art history, this piece represents the intersection of visual art and literature. It captures the quiet, contemplative nature of the period, where the appreciation of seasonal beauty was expressed through both the written word and the printed page. The print serves as a record of the collaborative culture that flourished in the urban centres of Japan, where artists and poets engaged in a shared creative dialogue. This fine art print preserves the delicate balance of the original woodblock impression, offering a glimpse into the sophisticated graphic design traditions of the Edo era.
