A refined 1821 double portrait by Jacques-Louis David, depicting Zenaide and Charlotte-Bonaparte in a moment of quiet domesticity.
Painted in 1821, this double portrait depicts Zenaide and Charlotte-Bonaparte, the daughters of Joseph Bonaparte, during the artist's period of exile in Brussels. Jacques-Louis David, formerly the premier painter to Napoleon, applied his rigorous Neoclassical training to this intimate subject. The composition focuses on the physical closeness of the two sisters, who are seated together on a red sofa adorned with the golden bees associated with the Bonaparte family.
Zenaide, on the left, wears a pale blue silk gown with a high lace collar, while Charlotte is dressed in a dark velvet garment. They hold a sheet of music, suggesting a shared activity or a moment of quiet domesticity. The artist employs a controlled palette and precise brushwork, characteristics of his mature style. The lighting is soft, directed to illuminate the faces of the subjects while maintaining a clear distinction between the textures of their clothing and the surrounding upholstery.
David's approach to portraiture during his later years shifted from the grand historical narratives of his earlier career toward a more focused, personal observation of his sitters. The work remains a clear example of his technical proficiency, even when removed from the political centre of Paris. The background is kept simple, ensuring the viewer's attention remains on the interaction between the two figures. The inclusion of the musical score adds a layer of narrative, hinting at the refined education and interests of the Bonaparte sisters. This portrait provides a glimpse into the private life of the family in exile, captured with the formal discipline that defined David's entire body of work.
