A detailed sixteenth-century woodcut by Niccolo Boldrini, depicting a group of six saints in a balanced, frieze-like composition.
This woodcut by Niccolo Boldrini depicts a gathering of six figures, traditionally identified as saints. The composition is arranged in a frieze-like manner, typical of Venetian printmaking during the sixteenth century. On the far left, Saint Sebastian stands bound to a column, his body pierced by an arrow. Beside him, a Franciscan friar holds a crucifix, while the central group includes a bishop in elaborate vestments and other figures engaged in reading or contemplation. On the far right, a female saint holds a palm frond, a common attribute for martyrs.
Boldrini was a skilled woodcutter who frequently collaborated with Titian. His technique involves precise, parallel hatching to create volume and shadow, a method that translates the tonal qualities of painting into the stark medium of the woodblock. The drapery of the garments is rendered with particular attention to weight and fold, providing a sense of physical presence to each figure. The background is kept simple, consisting of horizontal lines that suggest a shallow space, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction and individual attributes of the saints.
This print reflects the technical standards of the period, where the woodcut served as a primary method for disseminating religious imagery to a wider audience. The clarity of the lines and the balanced arrangement of the figures demonstrate the influence of the Venetian school on print production. The work remains a clear example of the collaborative nature of Renaissance printmaking, where the skill of the cutter was essential to the successful reproduction of complex designs.
