A charming lithograph by Théodore Géricault depicting a market scene where a fishmonger naps behind his stall, observed by passersby.
This lithograph by Théodore Géricault captures a quiet, observational moment within a bustling market setting. Known primarily for his dramatic oil paintings of historical and military subjects, Géricault also produced a series of lithographs that explored the daily lives of ordinary people in early nineteenth-century France. This work depicts a fishmonger dozing behind his stall, oblivious to the small group of customers and the dog scavenging near his feet. The composition is defined by clear, confident lines that delineate the figures and the simple wooden structure of the stall. Géricault uses hatching to suggest shadow and texture, particularly in the heavy coats of the standing figures and the rough surface of the market table. The scene is devoid of the grandiosity often associated with the Romantic period, opting instead for a grounded, human perspective. The fishmonger, slumped in his seat with his top hat slightly askew, serves as the central figure of this lighthearted narrative. Technically, the work demonstrates Géricault's mastery of the lithographic medium, which was then a relatively new technology for artists. He employs the stone's surface to create varied tonal qualities, from the crisp outlines of the figures to the softer, shaded areas beneath the stall. The inclusion of the dog and the woman with a basket on her head adds a sense of movement and authenticity to the scene. This print offers a glimpse into the artist's broader interests, showing his ability to shift from monumental compositions to intimate, everyday observations. It remains a fine example of the genre work produced during the final years of his career, reflecting a keen eye for social detail and character study.
