A classic Dutch Golden Age genre scene by Gabriel Metsu, depicting a hunter resting beside his dog and a woman in a domestic setting.
Gabriel Metsu, a master of the Dutch Golden Age, produced this scene during his most active period in Amsterdam. The composition depicts a hunter who has succumbed to sleep, his gun resting nearby, while a woman stands to the left holding a glass and a jug. A second figure peers from a window above, observing the scene with a knowing expression. A spaniel sits alert in the foreground, providing a contrast to the slumbering man.
Metsu employs a warm, earthy palette to define the interior space. The play of light across the brickwork and the textures of the hunter's red breeches and the woman's white cap demonstrates his technical precision. The work belongs to the tradition of Dutch genre painting, which often incorporated moralising undertones regarding idleness or excess. The presence of the game bird on the stone block suggests a successful hunt, yet the hunter remains inactive, inviting the viewer to interpret the narrative tension between the figures.
The painting reflects the artist's ability to organise complex domestic arrangements into a coherent visual story. Metsu was influenced by the Leiden school, yet he developed a distinct approach to light and surface detail that distinguishes his work from his contemporaries. The inclusion of the dog and the discarded pipe adds a layer of realism, grounding the scene in the everyday life of the seventeenth-century Netherlands. This print captures the tonal depth of the original oil painting, preserving the atmospheric quality of the interior setting.
