A moody colour etching by Eugène Delâtre, capturing the Passerelle de Solférino in Paris at night with soft aquatint tones.
Eugène Delâtre, a master of the intaglio process, captures the atmospheric stillness of Paris at night in this colour etching and aquatint. The work depicts the Passerelle de Solférino, a pedestrian bridge spanning the Seine, rendered in a subdued palette that emphasises the quietude of the urban environment after dark. Delâtre employs the aquatint technique to create soft, tonal gradients, effectively mimicking the hazy quality of gaslight reflecting upon the water.
The composition is anchored by the dark, silhouetted embankment in the foreground, where a solitary figure stands, providing a sense of scale and human presence. The bridge itself is reduced to a series of rhythmic arches, punctuated by the faint, glowing lights that trace its structure. These lights are mirrored in the gentle ripples of the river, creating a vertical axis of illumination that breaks the horizontal dominance of the bridge and the horizon line.
Delâtre was highly regarded for his technical skill in printing, often collaborating with other artists to produce their editions. In his own work, he favoured subjects that allowed for experimentation with light and shadow. This print demonstrates his ability to manipulate ink density to achieve a painterly effect, moving away from the rigid lines of traditional engraving. The result is a study in mood and observation, capturing a fleeting moment of Parisian life. The muted tones and the deliberate lack of sharp detail invite the viewer to focus on the interplay between the artificial light and the encroaching darkness of the night. It is a precise observation of the city, stripped of its daytime bustle and presented in a state of calm reflection.
