Painted in 1914, The Song of Love is a primary example of Giorgio de Chirico's Metaphysical Art. The composition brings together disparate objects in a manner that defies logical spatial relationships. A large plaster cast of a classical head, reminiscent of the Apollo Belvedere, sits alongside a bright red rubber glove and a green ball. These items are positioned against a stark, architectural backdrop that suggests an Italian piazza, yet the perspective remains intentionally flattened and dreamlike.

De Chirico utilised these objects to evoke a sense of unease and mystery. By placing classical antiquity in direct contact with modern, mundane items, he created a visual language that prioritised psychological resonance over realistic representation. The long, sharp shadows cast by the objects suggest a late afternoon sun, adding to the quiet, static atmosphere of the scene. The train visible in the distance, a recurring motif in his work, introduces a sense of displacement and travel, further distancing the viewer from a conventional sense of place.

This work influenced the development of Surrealism, as artists like René Magritte and Salvador Dalí drew upon de Chirico's method of juxtaposing unrelated objects to create new meanings. The painting avoids narrative clarity, instead inviting the viewer to observe the tension between the cold, white stone of the sculpture and the tactile, synthetic quality of the glove. The colour palette is deliberate, using the contrast between the red glove and the blue sky to draw the eye across the canvas.
