A woodblock print by Ohara Koson, 'The Spiderweb' depicts a bird perched on a branch, observing a spiderweb. The print showcases Koson's skill in combining naturalistic elements with traditional Japanese aesthetics.
Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist associated with the Shin-hanga movement, which revitalised traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock printing. He is known for his depictions of birds and flowers (kachō-e). Koson initially trained in painting, but later shifted to woodblock print design, working with publishers to produce prints for Western audiences. His work often combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with Western naturalism. He sometimes signed his work as Shōson or Hōson. In this print, a bird perches on a branch, its gaze directed towards a spiderweb. The web, spun with delicate precision, occupies a significant portion of the composition, drawing the eye with its radial pattern. A single leaf falls nearby, adding a sense of quiet movement. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by grey tones, which enhances the contemplative mood of the scene. The composition reflects a balance between naturalistic observation and decorative arrangement, typical of Koson's approach.
