A dynamic depiction of the Roman Carnival's riderless horse race, capturing the raw energy and physical struggle between grooms and their spirited mounts.
Horace Vernet captures the chaotic energy of the Barberi horse race in Rome, a tradition that took place during the Carnival. The scene depicts the moment before the start, where grooms struggle to restrain the spirited, unmounted horses. The composition is defined by the tension between the powerful, rearing animals and the men attempting to hold them in place. A white horse dominates the foreground, its muscular form rendered with dynamic brushwork that conveys movement and agitation. Beside it, a chestnut horse pulls against its handler, while a darker horse appears to have fallen or is being brought under control in the centre of the fray.
Vernet, known for his ability to depict military and equestrian subjects with precision, uses a palette of earthy tones punctuated by the stark white of the lead horse. The background features a tiered viewing stand filled with spectators, providing a sense of scale and public spectacle. The artist avoids static poses, opting instead for a composition that feels immediate and raw. The lighting focuses on the physical exertion of both the men and the horses, creating a sense of urgency that defines the atmosphere of the event.
This work reflects the fascination with Italian customs that occupied many European artists during the early nineteenth century. Vernet spent significant time in Rome, and his observations of the city's life informed his approach to this subject. The painting does not seek to idealise the scene, but rather presents the raw, physical reality of the race. The brushwork remains loose and expressive, allowing the viewer to sense the frantic nature of the preparations. It is a study of controlled chaos, where the boundary between human effort and animal instinct is tested.
