A classic ink wash painting by Dai Benxiao, depicting the rugged peaks and pine trees of Mount Tiantai with precise, restrained brushwork.
Dai Benxiao was a painter active during the early Qing dynasty, known for his focus on the Huangshan and Tiantai mountain ranges. This work displays the characteristic brushwork of the Anhui school, which favoured dry, sparse ink application to convey the rugged texture of granite peaks. The composition follows the traditional vertical hanging scroll format, guiding the viewer from the foreground rocks upward through a series of mist-filled ravines and craggy cliffs.
The pines, which give the work its title, are rendered with deliberate, angular strokes. They cling to the precipices, demonstrating the artist's interest in the resilience of nature. Unlike the more decorative styles of his contemporaries, Dai Benxiao utilised a restrained palette and a focus on structural clarity. The negative space, representing clouds or mountain mist, provides a sense of scale and atmosphere, separating the distinct rock formations while maintaining a unified visual flow.
In the upper left corner, the artist included a calligraphic inscription. This text provides context for the scene, linking the physical observation of the mountain to the philosophical traditions of the period. The ink wash is applied with precision, creating subtle gradations that define the depth of the valley without relying on heavy shading. This print captures the original's monochromatic quality, preserving the balance between the solid rock and the ethereal void that defines the shan shui tradition.
