Frida Kahlo's *The Suicide of Dorothy Hale* (1939) is a graphic depiction of the death of American actress Dorothy Hale, commissioned as a memorial portrait but ultimately deemed too shocking for its patron.
Painted in 1939, Frida Kahlo's *The Suicide of Dorothy Hale* depicts the death of the American actress after she jumped from a window of the Hampshire House hotel in New York City. Kahlo was commissioned by Clare Boothe Luce, a mutual friend of Kahlo and Hale, to paint a portrait of Hale. Luce expected a conventional memorial portrait; however, Kahlo delivered a graphic depiction of Hale's suicide. Luce was so shocked that she considered destroying the painting, but instead stored it in a warehouse. It was later donated to the Phoenix Art Museum. The painting shows Hale's fall from the building, with her body depicted both falling and lying on the ground below. The Hampshire House building is rendered in a pale yellow, contrasting with the grey and white clouds. The inscription at the bottom of the painting, written in Spanish, translates to: "In New York City, on the 21st day of October, 1938, Mrs. Dorothy Hale committed suicide by throwing herself out of a very high window of the Hampshire House. In her memory. Frida Kahlo painted it."
