This engraving depicts the tragic conclusion of the Roman legend of Lucretia. According to the narrative, Lucretia took her own life after being violated by Sextus Tarquinius, an act that precipitated the fall of the Roman monarchy and the establishment of the Republic. Philips Galle, a prominent Dutch engraver and publisher, captures the immediate aftermath of the event. The composition is arranged within a domestic interior, where Lucretia is surrounded by her husband, Collatinus, and her father, Spurius Lucretius Tricipitinus.

The figures are rendered with the precise, controlled line work characteristic of sixteenth-century Northern European printmaking. Galle employs a clear, structured approach to the scene, using cross-hatching to define the musculature of the men and the folds of Lucretia's garments.
