A fine Renaissance engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicting the Virgin Mary supported by the holy women, rendered with precise hatching and classical form.
This engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicts the Virgin Mary in a state of collapse, supported by the holy women following the crucifixion. Bonasone, an Italian engraver and painter active in Bologna and Rome, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of controlled hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow. The composition focuses on the physical weight of the unconscious figure, with the surrounding women providing both structural support and emotional resonance. The drapery is rendered with precision, following the contours of the bodies to create a sense of volume and movement within the static scene.
Bonasone often worked after designs by other masters, and this print reflects the influence of the Roman school, particularly the works of Raphael and his circle. The figures are arranged in a balanced, pyramidal structure, a common device in sixteenth-century Italian art to provide stability to complex narrative scenes. The lines are clean and deliberate, characteristic of the period's approach to copperplate engraving, where the artist sought to replicate the clarity of drawing through the medium of metal. The absence of a background setting directs the viewer's attention entirely to the interaction between the figures, emphasising the gravity of the moment. This print serves as an example of the dissemination of religious imagery during the Italian Renaissance, where the reproduction of such scenes allowed for wider access to theological narratives. The work remains a study in the application of line to convey human emotion and physical exhaustion, stripped of extraneous detail.
