A refined woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga, depicting three elegant women on a temple balcony with a view of Mount Fuji.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga belongs to the series Mount Fuji in the Four Seasons (Shiki no Fuji), produced during the mid-1780s. Kiyonaga was a master of the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. In this composition, he presents three figures standing on a temple balcony, their tall, slender proportions characteristic of his mature style. The women are dressed in kimonos with subtle floral patterns, their postures relaxed as they observe the view.
To the left, the distant peak of Mount Fuji is visible, providing a sense of scale and seasonal context. The architectural elements of the temple frame the figures, creating a sense of depth that guides the eye from the foreground balcony toward the horizon. Kiyonaga employs a balanced colour palette, using muted tones of green, soft red, and ochre to maintain a sense of harmony. The lines are precise and controlled, typical of the high technical standards of the Edo period printmaking tradition.
Kiyonaga was a central figure in the Torii school, and his work is noted for its clarity and compositional balance. Unlike the more exaggerated styles of his contemporaries, his figures possess a naturalistic grace. This print demonstrates his ability to integrate human subjects with architectural and natural settings, a hallmark of his approach to the ukiyo-e medium. The inclusion of the Rakan temple reference adds a layer of cultural specificity to the scene, grounding the elegant figures within a recognisable Japanese setting. The print remains a clear example of the aesthetic values prevalent in late eighteenth-century Tokyo, then known as Edo.
