A 1575 hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicting the biblical scene of Adam and Eve in the garden.
This hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I, dated 1575, depicts the biblical narrative of the Fall of Man. Adam and Eve are positioned beneath the tree of knowledge, where a serpent coils around the trunk. The composition follows the conventions of sixteenth-century Northern Mannerism, balancing human figures with a variety of animals, including a camel, sheep, and a bird of prey, which populate the surrounding terrain.
Sadeler, a member of a prominent family of engravers from Antwerp, demonstrates technical precision in his line work. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions characteristic of the period, while the application of colour provides a decorative quality to the scene. The inclusion of Latin text at the base of the print, referencing the Book of Genesis, situates the work within the tradition of moralising biblical imagery common in the late Renaissance. The surrounding environment is depicted with a sense of order, reflecting the period's interest in natural history and the classification of the animal kingdom.
This print is an example of the collaborative nature of print production in the sixteenth century, where engravers often worked from designs by other artists to create series for a wider audience. The work captures the aesthetic sensibilities of the era, combining religious subject matter with a fascination for the natural world. The careful balance between the central figures and the peripheral elements creates a narrative space that invites close inspection of the individual details, from the foliage to the specific animals chosen to populate the garden of Eden.
