A depiction of Saint Thomas Aquinas being girded by angels after resisting temptation, rendered in the restrained Baroque style of Diego Velázquez.
This work depicts a specific episode from the life of Saint Thomas Aquinas. According to hagiographic accounts, the saint was tempted by a woman sent to his cell, but he drove her away with a burning log from the fireplace. Following this victory, two angels appeared to gird him with a cord of chastity, symbolising his divine protection and purity.
Velázquez presents the scene with a restrained approach to the miraculous. The composition focuses on the physical interaction between the figures. Saint Thomas is shown in a state of exhaustion or prayer, his head resting against the shoulder of an angel. The second angel, standing to the left, holds the white cord, while a glimpse of the rejected temptress is visible through the open doorway in the background. The artist employs a muted palette, allowing the stark white of the saint's habit and the cord to draw the eye.
The setting is sparse, reflecting the ascetic nature of the saint's life. A simple wooden stool holds an inkwell and quill, while an open book lies on the floor, suggesting the intellectual labour that defined his career. The fireplace, rendered with architectural precision, provides a vertical anchor for the composition. Velázquez avoids excessive theatricality, choosing instead to capture a moment of quiet, spiritual intimacy. The handling of light is characteristic of his mature style, creating soft transitions between the figures and the surrounding shadows. This painting demonstrates his ability to translate theological narratives into human terms, focusing on the emotional weight of the encounter rather than purely supernatural spectacle. The work remains a fine example of Spanish Baroque painting, where the sacred and the mundane coexist within a single, carefully observed interior space.
