This abstract painting by Hilma af Klint, 'The Ten Biggest, No. 4, Group IV', is part of a series exploring stages of life through geometric forms and symbolic colours. Created in 1907, it exemplifies her pioneering work in abstract art.
Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist and mystic whose paintings are considered among the first abstract works in Western art history. She created her first abstract paintings in 1906, predating Kandinsky, Mondrian, and Malevich. Af Klint believed that she was acting as a medium, channeling messages from spiritual guides known as 'The High Masters'. These entities commissioned her to create paintings for a temple, resulting in series such as 'The Paintings for the Temple'. 'The Ten Biggest' is a series of paintings within this larger body of work. Each painting represents a different stage of life. 'No. 4, Group IV' features a warm orange background populated with geometric shapes and swirling forms. Spirals, circles, and clusters of ovoid shapes create a sense of dynamic movement. The colour palette includes yellows, purples, and blacks, with touches of metal leaf adding luminosity. The composition is non-representational, relying on symbolic forms and colours to convey spiritual ideas.
