A minimalist work from Barnett Newman's series, The Stations of the Cross, featuring a subtle interplay of white and raw canvas.
The Tenth Station is a component of the series titled The Stations of the Cross: Lema Sabachthani, produced by Barnett Newman between 1958 and 1966. This series consists of fourteen large canvases, each exploring the relationship between colour, space, and the human experience. The Tenth Station is characterised by its restricted palette, focusing on the interplay between white and raw, unprimed canvas.
Newman utilised his signature vertical element, often referred to as a zip, to divide the pictorial field. In this specific work, the composition relies on subtle tonal shifts rather than high-contrast colour. The application of paint is deliberate, allowing the texture of the canvas to remain visible. This approach invites the viewer to engage with the physical surface of the work, rather than searching for representational imagery.
By limiting his visual vocabulary, Newman aimed to create an environment where the viewer confronts the scale and presence of the painting directly. The series as a whole references the biblical narrative of the Passion, yet Newman avoided literal depictions. Instead, he sought to express the universal nature of suffering and the human condition through abstract form. The Tenth Station functions as a quiet, meditative space within the larger sequence. Its minimalist aesthetic reflects the artist's interest in the sublime, where the absence of traditional subject matter allows for a direct encounter with the work's materiality. The work is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and remains a significant example of Newman's late-career focus on the expressive potential of pure colour and line.
