A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunjō, capturing the kabuki actor Segawa Kikunojo III in a delicate onnagata role.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunjō depicts the kabuki actor Segawa Kikunojo III in an onnagata role. The onnagata, a male actor specialising in female parts, was a central figure in the theatrical culture of Edo-period Japan. Shunjō, a member of the Katsukawa school, focused his practice on capturing the specific likenesses of actors rather than the idealised, generic faces common in earlier ukiyo-e prints. This shift towards realism, known as yakusha-e, allowed audiences to recognise their favourite performers through distinct facial features and characteristic poses.
In this composition, the actor is shown playing a flute, a gesture that suggests a moment of quiet performance or rehearsal. The figure wears a layered kimono decorated with patterns of bamboo and floral motifs. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted greens, soft ochres, and faded pinks, which is typical of the benizuri-e technique used during this period. The background features simple, horizontal bands that provide a sense of spatial depth without distracting from the central figure. The lines are precise and controlled, defining the folds of the heavy fabric and the delicate features of the actor.
Katsukawa Shunjō was active during the late 18th century and contributed to the development of the actor print genre. His work reflects the close relationship between the kabuki theatre and the print market, where fans purchased these images as souvenirs or collectibles. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to carve and register multiple woodblocks to achieve the final image. By focusing on the individual performer, Shunjō provides a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the period, where the artifice of the theatre was celebrated through the medium of the printed page.
