A masterful Baroque depiction of the mythological Three Fates by Bernardo Strozzi, focusing on the tactile reality of their task.
Bernardo Strozzi, a Genoese master of the early Baroque period, presents a compelling interpretation of the Moirai, or the Three Fates of classical mythology. In this composition, the artist depicts Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos not as ethereal deities, but as grounded, tangible figures engaged in the act of spinning and cutting the thread of human life. Strozzi employs a tenebrist approach, utilising strong contrasts between light and shadow to model the figures and focus the viewer's attention on their manual tasks.
The figure on the left, typically identified as Clotho, holds the distaff, while the central figure, Lachesis, measures the thread. Atropos, positioned in the foreground, prepares to sever the thread with a pair of shears. Strozzi’s brushwork is fluid and confident, a characteristic trait of his mature style developed during his time in Venice. The palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones and deep shadows to create a sense of gravity and seriousness. The figures are rendered with a focus on naturalism, capturing the texture of their garments and the physical reality of their aging features. This work demonstrates Strozzi's ability to translate complex allegorical themes into human terms, avoiding overly ornate or decorative elements in favour of a direct, narrative approach. The composition is tightly packed, forcing the viewer to engage with the immediate, tactile nature of the scene. By stripping away extraneous detail, Strozzi ensures the focus remains on the inevitability of the action performed by the three women, reflecting the philosophical weight often associated with the subject in seventeenth-century European art.
