A woodcut print by German Expressionist Heinrich Campendonk, 'The Tiger' features a stylised tiger surrounded by other animals and plants, rendered in bold black and white.
Heinrich Campendonk (1889-1957) was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker. He is associated with the group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). Campendonk's work often combined folk art elements with modern abstraction. His style is characterised by simplified forms and symbolic imagery. He was persecuted by the Nazis and his work was labelled as degenerate art. He emigrated to the Netherlands in 1935, where he continued to paint and teach. 'The Tiger' is a woodcut print featuring a tiger in a stylised, almost cartoonish manner. The animal is depicted with bold outlines and simplified shapes, typical of Expressionist art. The composition includes other animals, such as frogs, and plant forms. The print uses stark black and white contrast to create a visually striking image. The overall effect is one of playful yet slightly unsettling naivety.
