A rare uki-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kuninaga, depicting the Tomb of King Mausolus through the lens of eighteenth-century Japanese perspective techniques.
This woodblock print belongs to the genre of uki-e, or perspective pictures, which gained popularity in late eighteenth-century Japan. Artists of this period experimented with Western linear perspective, a technique introduced through imported Dutch engravings. Utagawa Kuninaga applies this method to depict the Tomb of King Mausolus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The composition relies on a receding diagonal line to create an illusion of depth, guiding the eye toward the architectural structure.
The print displays a synthesis of Eastern and Western visual languages. While the building exhibits a rigid, geometric perspective characteristic of European architectural studies, the figures and surrounding flora retain the stylistic conventions of the ukiyo-e tradition. The figures, dressed in garments that reflect an imagined, exoticised view of foreign attire, interact with the space in a manner typical of the period's theatrical approach to historical subjects. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted tones that have softened over time, while the line work maintains a clean, precise quality suitable for the woodblock medium.
Uki-e prints often functioned as educational curiosities, offering viewers a glimpse into distant lands and historical narratives through a lens of artistic fantasy. This work demonstrates the curiosity of Edo-period artists regarding foreign techniques and subjects. The inclusion of palm trees and rolling hills provides a sense of place, though the architecture itself is a product of artistic interpretation rather than archaeological accuracy. The print serves as a record of the cross-cultural exchange that defined the late Edo period, where imported visual ideas were adapted to suit local tastes and printmaking practices.
