A 14th-century Tibetan thangka depicting the Buddha Akshobhya in a meditative posture, surrounded by a detailed border of deities.
This thangka depicts Akshobhya, one of the five wisdom Buddhas in Vajrayana Buddhism. The central figure is rendered in a deep blue hue, seated in the vajrasana posture upon a lotus throne. His right hand reaches down to touch the earth, a gesture known as the bhumisparsha mudra, which signifies his triumph over Mara. He is flanked by two standing bodhisattvas, while the surrounding border contains smaller, circular vignettes of various deities and figures, creating a structured, hierarchical composition typical of Himalayan devotional painting.
The use of distemper on cotton allows for the application of opaque, saturated pigments. The artist employs a formalised iconographic system, where the proportions and colours of the deity are dictated by religious texts. The background features a dark, atmospheric tone that contrasts with the warm reds and golds of the throne and the surrounding figures. This colour scheme draws the eye toward the central Buddha, whose calm expression provides a sense of stability amidst the dense, decorative surroundings.
Such paintings were produced for ritual use, acting as visual aids for meditation and as objects of veneration. The precision of the line work and the careful arrangement of the secondary figures demonstrate the technical skill required of the monastic artists who created these works. The composition follows a strict grid, ensuring that the spiritual hierarchy remains clear to the viewer. This print captures the texture and colour of the original textile, preserving the visual character of the 14th-century Tibetan tradition.
