A 1778 etching by Francisco Goya, reproducing the famous painting by Diego Velázquez, depicting the mythological figure of Bacchus among commoners.
This etching by Francisco Goya reproduces the famous painting by Diego Velázquez, known as The Triumph of Bacchus or Los Borrachos. Produced in 1778, the print demonstrates Goya's early technical proficiency with the etching needle. He captures the narrative of the mythological god Bacchus surrounded by a group of commoners in a rustic setting. The composition maintains the original painting's juxtaposition of the divine figure with the earthy, realistic depictions of the men drinking wine.
Goya translates the painterly qualities of Velázquez into a monochrome medium through varied line work and cross-hatching. The central figure of Bacchus is rendered with a softer touch, contrasting with the more rugged, textured appearance of the surrounding drinkers. The print includes an inscription at the bottom, which identifies the original painter, the subject, and the engraver. This work was part of a series of prints Goya created to study and disseminate the royal collections held in Madrid.
The scene is set outdoors, with a suggestion of a distant horizon. The figures are arranged in a semi-circle, creating a sense of communal activity. Goya pays close attention to the expressions of the men, ranging from jovial to contemplative. The etching serves as a record of the Spanish Golden Age painting, filtered through the aesthetic sensibilities of the late eighteenth century. It remains a significant example of how artists of the period engaged with the work of their predecessors to refine their own skills in composition and light. The print is presented here with the clarity of the original copper plate, allowing for a close examination of the mark-making and the tonal range achieved by the artist.
