This work is a component of the Marie de' Medici cycle, a series of twenty-four paintings commissioned by the Queen of France to document her life and political achievements. Rubens executed this specific canvas to commemorate the siege of Juliers, an event occurring in 1610. The composition features Marie de' Medici depicted in the guise of a triumphant commander, mounted upon a white horse. She wears armour and a plumed helmet, symbolising her authority and military success.

Above the central figure, a winged personification of Victory descends to crown her with a laurel wreath. To the left, a female figure stands in a flowing garment, observing the scene. The background displays the fortress of Juliers, rendered with atmospheric depth under a turbulent, dramatic sky. Rubens employs his characteristic painterly technique, using fluid brushwork and a dynamic arrangement of figures to convey movement and energy. The lighting is theatrical, directing the viewer's eye toward the Queen while casting the surrounding landscape in shadow.

As a master of the Baroque style, Rubens balances historical fact with allegorical elements. The inclusion of classical motifs, such as the winged Victory, elevates the subject matter from a mere military record to a grand narrative of statecraft.
