A detailed chiaroscuro woodcut by Andrea Andreani, depicting a segment of a Roman triumphal procession based on the works of Andrea Mantegna.
This chiaroscuro woodcut by Andrea Andreani depicts a segment of a grand Roman procession. It is part of a series based on the famous paintings by Andrea Mantegna, which were originally created for the Gonzaga family in Mantua. Andreani, a master of the woodcut technique, translated the monumental scale of Mantegna's work into a series of prints that allowed for wider dissemination of the imagery.
The composition shows soldiers and attendants moving across the frame, carrying large, ornate vessels and trophies. The figures are rendered with a focus on classical drapery and anatomical precision, reflecting the influence of antique sculpture. Long trumpets held by the participants point towards the upper right, drawing the eye toward a distant, classical architectural structure that sits atop a hill. The use of multiple woodblocks creates a subtle tonal range, providing depth to the scene through light and shadow rather than colour.
Andreani's work is notable for its technical control. By using different blocks for the line work and the tonal washes, he achieved a sculptural quality that mimics the appearance of a drawing or a grisaille painting. The inclusion of the inscription SPQR DIVO IVLIO CAESARI DPPD identifies the subject as a celebration of Julius Caesar, linking the print to the historical narratives of the Roman Empire that were popular during the Italian Renaissance. This print captures the theatrical nature of the original paintings, presenting a moment of ordered movement and ceremonial display.
