A fine Renaissance engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicting the mythological Triumph of Juno, framed by decorative architectural elements and classical motifs.
This engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicts the classical subject of the Triumph of Juno. The goddess sits prominently within a chariot, accompanied by her traditional attribute, the peacock, which stands behind her. The composition is framed by an elaborate architectural border, featuring putti, grotesque masks, and festoons of fruit. This decorative structure reflects the influence of the Roman school, where Bonasone spent much of his career.
Bonasone was a prolific printmaker in Bologna and Rome, known for his technical skill in reproducing the works of other masters, such as Raphael and Michelangelo, alongside his own original designs. His approach to the burin allows for a clear, structured rendering of form, seen here in the modelling of the figures and the precise hatching used to create light and shadow. The scene includes a cartouche at the top bearing the artist's name and a poetic inscription at the base, which addresses the viewer regarding the nature of the divine triumph.
The work demonstrates the Renaissance interest in classical mythology and the integration of text with visual imagery. The figures are rendered with a sense of classical proportion, while the surrounding ornamentation provides a sense of balance and order. The inclusion of the peacock and the specific posture of Juno align with established iconographic traditions of the period. This print offers a view into the sixteenth-century practice of disseminating mythological narratives through the medium of engraving, making such imagery accessible to a wider audience beyond the patrons of large-scale paintings or frescoes. The print remains a clear example of the Mannerist aesthetic, where the focus on decorative elements and formal grace takes precedence over naturalistic representation.
