This tempera on panel painting by Filippo Lippi, 'The Triumph of Mordecai', depicts a scene from the Book of Esther, showcasing the artist's delicate lines and graceful figures typical of the Early Renaissance.
Filippo Lippi (1406-1469) was an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance. He spent his early years as a Carmelite friar, but left monastic life to pursue his artistic career. Lippi's work is characterised by its delicate lines, graceful figures, and use of colour. He was influenced by Masaccio and Fra Angelico, and he, in turn, influenced artists such as Botticelli and Ghirlandaio. 'The Triumph of Mordecai' depicts a scene from the Book of Esther. Mordecai, a Jewish leader, is honoured by being paraded through the city on the king's horse. Haman, who had plotted to destroy the Jews, is forced to lead the horse. The painting shows Mordecai on horseback, wearing a red robe, while Haman walks beside him. The background features a city with white walls and towers. The composition is simple and clear, with a focus on the figures and their expressions. The colours are soft and muted, creating a sense of calm and dignity.
