Frans Francken the Younger was a central figure in the Antwerp school of painting during the early seventeenth century. This work depicts the classical myth of Neptune and Amphitrite, a subject that allowed the artist to explore complex figural arrangements and the fluid dynamics of water. The composition is crowded with mythological beings, including sea nymphs, tritons, and horses, all gathered around the central deities. Neptune, identified by his trident, and Amphitrite are positioned on a shell-like vessel, surrounded by a swirling mass of figures that occupy the foreground and middle ground.

The painting demonstrates the characteristic Flemish approach to mythological scenes, where the narrative is secondary to the display of varied human forms and marine creatures.
