A preparatory oil sketch by Peter Paul Rubens depicting the allegorical triumph of the Church, characterised by dynamic movement and Baroque theatricality.
This oil sketch by Peter Paul Rubens represents a preparatory study for the Triumph of the Eucharist series, a set of monumental tapestries commissioned by the Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia for the Convent of the Descalzas Reales in Madrid. Rubens, a master of the Flemish Baroque, utilised this composition to explore the dynamic movement and theological weight of the subject matter.
The scene depicts the personified Church seated upon a triumphal chariot, holding a monstrance aloft. The composition is organised around a sense of forward momentum, with horses pulling the chariot and figures surrounding the central vehicle in a flurry of motion. Rubens employs a fluid, painterly technique, using light and shadow to define the forms of the figures and the architectural frame that encloses the scene. The inclusion of putti, allegorical figures, and the dove of the Holy Spirit creates a complex narrative space, typical of the Counter-Reformation art produced during this period.
Rubens demonstrates his skill in managing large-scale compositions through this smaller, more immediate work. The brushwork remains visible, providing insight into his process of layering colour and building volume. The palette is characterised by warm, golden tones contrasted against the cooler blues of the sky, which helps to focus the viewer on the central figure of the Church. The architectural border, painted to resemble a frame, adds a sense of depth and theatricality to the work, reinforcing the illusion of a grand, staged event. This piece offers a clear view of the artist's ability to synthesise classical motifs with religious themes, resulting in a work that balances physical energy with spiritual gravity.
