A satirical 1695 etching by Cornelis Dusart depicting a chaotic scene in a rural surgeon's office, complete with period-specific medical tools and expressive figures.
Cornelis Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, produced this etching in 1695. The work belongs to the tradition of Dutch genre scenes, which often depicted the lives of common people with a mixture of humour and satire. The scene shows a surgeon performing a procedure on a patient, whose expression of agony is exaggerated for comedic effect. A woman stands to the left, her hands clasped in distress or perhaps anticipation of the outcome.
The room is cluttered with objects typical of a seventeenth-century medical practitioner, including jars, tools, and a taxidermied animal suspended from the ceiling. These details provide insight into the contemporary perception of rural medicine, which was frequently viewed with scepticism. The etching technique allows for a high degree of textural variation, from the rough clothing of the figures to the worn surfaces of the furniture.
Below the image, the text provides a dialogue between the characters, written in Dutch. This inclusion of narrative text was common in prints of the period, serving to clarify the situation and enhance the satirical tone. The composition is dense, drawing the viewer into the chaotic atmosphere of the surgery. Dusart uses light and shadow to focus attention on the central interaction, while the surrounding clutter adds to the sense of disorder. This print offers a glimpse into the social observations of the late seventeenth century, capturing a moment of domestic drama with technical precision.
