A 1514 engraving by Albrecht Dürer depicting the Virgin and Child, noted for its precise cross-hatching and detailed architectural background.
Albrecht Dürer produced this engraving in 1514, a period during which he refined his mastery of the burin to achieve unprecedented tonal variation. The composition depicts the Virgin Mary seated upon a stone ledge, cradling the Christ Child. Her heavy drapery falls in deep, angular folds, a characteristic feature of Dürer's graphic style that suggests weight and volume through precise cross-hatching.
In the background, a fortified castle sits atop a hill, overlooking a winding river. This inclusion of a specific, identifiable architectural setting provides a sense of place that contrasts with the intimate, domestic nature of the primary figures. Dürer's ability to render different textures, from the soft skin of the infant to the rough masonry of the wall and the complex weave of the fabric, demonstrates his technical precision. The artist's monogram, the famous AD, appears on a stone tablet to the right of the Virgin, confirming the work as an authentic product of his Nuremberg workshop.
This engraving belongs to a series of devotional images that Dürer created for a wide audience. Unlike his larger, more complex allegorical prints, this work focuses on the human connection between mother and child. The lighting is consistent, casting soft shadows that define the forms without relying on excessive contrast. The print remains a primary example of the Northern Renaissance approach to printmaking, where the artist sought to balance naturalistic observation with theological subject matter. Collectors of Dürer's work often note the clarity of the lines, which have remained sharp across centuries of impressions. This print offers a clear view into the technical standards of the early sixteenth century, showing how an artist could manipulate metal plates to create a sense of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface.
