An engraving by Agostino Carracci, depicting the Virgin Mary in a landscape setting. The artwork uses fine lines and hatching to create depth and volume.
This engraving of the Virgin Mary is by Agostino Carracci, an Italian painter, printmaker, and art theorist. He was a member of the Carracci family of artists who played an important role in the development of the Baroque style in Bologna and Rome. Agostino, along with his brother Annibale and cousin Ludovico, founded an art academy called the Accademia degli Incamminati (Academy of the Progressives). This institution was influential in promoting a new approach to art education, emphasising drawing from life and studying the works of the Old Masters. The print depicts the Virgin Mary standing in a landscape, surrounded by a halo of stars. She is draped in a heavy cloak, with one hand placed over her chest. The background features a simple landscape with a few trees and horizontal lines suggesting the sky. The image is rendered with fine, precise lines, typical of engraving, creating a sense of depth and volume through hatching and cross-hatching.
