A fine engraving by Martin Schongauer, depicting the Virgin Mary with a lily, showcasing the technical precision of Northern Renaissance printmaking.
Martin Schongauer, a master of the Northern Renaissance, produced this engraving during the late fifteenth century. The work depicts the Virgin Mary in a moment of quiet contemplation, a standard subject for the period. Schongauer employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the volume of the figure and the texture of her garments. The drapery folds are rendered with precision, creating a sense of weight and movement that characterises his technical approach to the copper plate.
To the left of the Virgin, a lily stands in a vase, a traditional symbol of purity associated with the Annunciation. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the flower stem echoing the posture of the figure. Schongauer’s ability to render fine detail, from the individual petals of the lily to the delicate features of the Virgin, demonstrates his influence on the development of printmaking in Germany. The artist’s monogram, M+S, is visible at the bottom centre, a mark of his professional identity as both a painter and an engraver.
This print reflects the technical rigour of the period, where the engraver had to account for the physical resistance of the metal plate. The lines are clean and deliberate, allowing for a clear tonal range despite the monochrome medium. The Virgin holds a small book, suggesting her engagement with scripture, a common motif in depictions of this scene. The background remains plain, focusing the viewer's attention on the interaction between the figure and the symbolic flora. This work provides an example of the transition from late Gothic sensibilities toward the more naturalistic observations that would define the coming decades of European art.
