The work depicts the Virgin Mary in a moment of quiet contemplation, a standard subject for the period. The drapery folds are rendered with precision, creating a sense of weight and movement that characterises his technical approach to the copper plate.

To the left of the Virgin, a lily stands in a vase, a traditional symbol of purity associated with the Annunciation. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the flower stem echoing the posture of the figure. Schongauer’s ability to render fine detail, from the individual petals of the lily to the delicate features of the Virgin, demonstrates his influence on the development of printmaking in Germany.
