A 1514 engraving by Albrecht Dürer depicting the Virgin Mary and Christ Child, characterised by precise line work and traditional religious iconography.
Albrecht Dürer, a master of the Northern Renaissance, produced this engraving in 1514. The work depicts the Virgin Mary standing upon a crescent moon, a traditional iconographic motif derived from the Book of Revelation. She holds the Christ Child, who gazes outward while clutching a small object. Dürer employs his signature technical precision, using varied line weights to define the heavy folds of the Virgin's drapery and the soft texture of the child's form.
The composition is framed by a radiating mandorla, which creates a sense of divine light emanating from the figures. Dürer's mastery of the burin is evident in the cross-hatching and parallel lines that build volume and shadow across the surface. The artist's monogram, AD, appears in the lower right corner alongside the date, a standard practice for his prints during this period.
This engraving belongs to a series of works where Dürer explored the intersection of human form and spiritual subject matter. The Virgin's expression is calm, and her hair is restrained by a simple band, reflecting a humanised approach to religious figures common in his oeuvre. The crescent moon, often associated with the Immaculate Conception, provides a stable base for the figures, grounding the celestial imagery within the physical constraints of the copper plate. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance complex tonal transitions with clear, readable contours. It remains a clear example of the technical standards achieved by Dürer in the early sixteenth century, showing his influence on the development of printmaking as a medium for artistic expression.
