The Virgin of the Immaculate Conception - El Greco

A late-period masterpiece by El Greco, depicting the Virgin Mary in a celestial ascent, characterised by elongated forms and dramatic, expressive brushwork.

Painted during the final years of his life, this work by El Greco depicts the Virgin Mary ascending towards the heavens. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the celestial realm above, where the Virgin is surrounded by a host of angels and the Holy Spirit, and the earthly realm below, which features a classical temple and a collection of symbolic flora.

El Greco employs his characteristic elongated figures and dramatic, flickering light to create a sense of spiritual agitation. The Virgin stands upon a crescent moon, a traditional iconographic element associated with the Immaculate Conception. Her robes, rendered in deep blues and reds, contrast with the swirling, ethereal clouds that occupy the upper portion of the canvas. The brushwork is fluid and expressive, prioritising emotional intensity over anatomical precision.

In the lower section, the inclusion of architectural elements and lilies provides a grounding contrast to the supernatural activity occurring above. The artist uses a palette dominated by cool greys, deep shadows, and flashes of saturated colour to guide the viewer's eye through the vertical movement of the scene. This painting was originally commissioned for the chapel of the Oballe family in the church of San Vicente in Toledo. It remains a primary example of the artist's late style, which moved away from the strict naturalism of his earlier Italian training towards a more personal, visionary mode of expression. The work captures the tension between the physical world and the divine, a theme that occupied much of the artist's career in Spain.
