A detailed Renaissance engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicting the Virgin Mary washing the feet of the Christ Child, accompanied by an angel.
This engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicts a domestic scene involving the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, and attendant figures. Bonasone, an Italian painter and engraver active in Bologna, was known for his technical precision and his ability to translate complex compositions into the medium of print. His work often drew inspiration from the masters of the Roman High Renaissance, particularly Raphael and Michelangelo, whose influence is visible in the sculptural quality of the figures and the balanced arrangement of the scene.
The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who is shown in the act of washing the feet of the young Christ. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical accuracy and drapery, characteristic of the period. To the left, an older woman assists with the task, while an angel is positioned to the right, holding a vessel. The inclusion of the angel introduces a supernatural element to an otherwise mundane, domestic setting. The background features architectural details and a small fire, which adds depth and atmosphere to the print.
Bonasone utilised a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to create volume and texture. The play of light across the fabric of the garments and the skin of the figures demonstrates his command of the burin. This print is a fine example of the reproductive print culture that flourished in sixteenth-century Italy, allowing the visual language of the Renaissance to circulate beyond the confines of private collections and churches. The work remains a study in the application of classical form to religious subject matter, reflecting the aesthetic priorities of the era. The clarity of the line work and the careful modulation of tone provide a clear view into the technical standards of the period, offering a glimpse into the methods employed by printmakers to convey narrative and emotion through monochrome media.
