Bourdon, a French painter and printmaker, was a significant figure in the development of French Baroque art. He is known for his diverse output, which includes history paintings, portraits, and genre scenes. His style blends elements of classicism and realism, influenced by his travels in Italy and exposure to different artistic traditions. Bourdon was also one of the original twelve founders of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1648. In this print, the Virgin Mary is shown in profile, her gaze directed towards the Christ Child, who reaches out to her. Saint Joseph stands behind them, reading a book. The composition is characterised by fine lines and detailed cross-hatching, which create a sense of depth and volume.
