A fine engraving by Cornelis Cort depicting the allegorical figure of Concordia, representing harmony and agreement through classical symbolism.
This engraving by Cornelis Cort depicts the personification of Concordia, the Roman goddess of agreement and harmony. Cort, a Dutch engraver who spent his later years in Italy, was instrumental in translating the works of painters like Titian into the medium of print. His technical mastery is evident here in the precise handling of the burin, which creates a range of textures from the soft folds of the figure's drapery to the rugged bark of the tree.
Concordia is shown seated in a natural setting, her posture relaxed yet composed. She gestures towards a bird perched on a branch above her, while a lion rests beside her, symbolising the taming of wild forces through peaceful accord. The inclusion of the Latin inscription at the base provides a moralising context, a common feature in sixteenth-century allegorical prints. The composition balances the human form with natural elements, demonstrating the influence of Italian Mannerism on Cort's work. The background reveals a distant, small-scale cityscape, a detail that adds depth to the scene without distracting from the central figure.
Cort's approach to line work is systematic, using varied hatching to define form and shadow. This print belongs to a series exploring various virtues, reflecting the humanist interest in classical iconography during the period. The work demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Antwerp print publishing house of Hieronymus Cock, where Cort began his career. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow, the artist achieves a sculptural quality that brings the allegorical subject to life. This print offers a clear example of the technical rigour that defined the Northern Renaissance printmaking tradition, providing a window into the intellectual and artistic preoccupations of the era.
