A detailed etching by Pietro Faccini depicting Saint Francis of Assisi in a moment of divine encounter, rendered with expressive, calligraphic lines.
This etching by Pietro Faccini depicts the mystical encounter of Saint Francis of Assisi. The saint kneels in a humble posture, his gaze directed upward toward a celestial apparition. He cradles the infant Christ in his arms, a scene that draws upon the Franciscan tradition of the saint's devotion to the humanity of Jesus. Faccini employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define the heavy folds of the saint's habit and the ethereal, cloud-like forms that surround the divine figures.
Faccini was active in Bologna during the late sixteenth century. His work often displays a departure from the rigid classicism of his contemporaries, favouring instead a more emotive and spontaneous approach to form. The etching technique here allows for a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows within the drapery to the lighter, more atmospheric treatment of the background. The composition is balanced, with the diagonal axis created by the saint's posture leading the eye toward the upper left, where the vision manifests. Small cherubic heads emerge from the clouds, adding to the sense of a crowded, spiritual space.
As a printmaker, Faccini demonstrates a command of cross-hatching and stippling to create volume. The ground upon which the saint kneels is rendered with quick, descriptive strokes, suggesting a rugged, natural setting. This work provides insight into the devotional art of the period, where the focus remains on the personal, psychological experience of the saint. The print captures a moment of quiet intensity, avoiding theatrical excess in favour of a more intimate portrayal of faith. It remains a representative example of the Bolognese school's interest in combining technical precision with expressive, painterly qualities in the medium of etching.
