A contemplative scene depicting the young Saint Sergius of Radonezh encountering a mysterious monk in a quiet, rural Russian field.
The Vision of the Young Bartholomew depicts a formative moment in the life of Saint Sergius of Radonezh, known in his youth as Bartholomew. Mikhail Nesterov captures the boy standing in a quiet, rural field, encountering a mysterious monk beneath the boughs of an ancient tree. The scene draws from hagiographic accounts of the saint, where a miraculous meeting with a stranger grants the young boy the ability to read and understand scripture.
Nesterov employs a muted, earthy palette to ground the supernatural event in the reality of the Russian countryside. The soft, golden light filtering through the trees suggests a spiritual presence, while the boy’s posture conveys a sense of earnest devotion. The composition balances the verticality of the monk and the tree against the expansive, rolling horizon of the background. This work is part of a larger cycle dedicated to the life of the saint, reflecting the artist's interest in national identity and spiritual themes.
The painting is noted for its atmospheric quality, where the natural environment acts as a participant in the narrative. The fine detail in the grasses and the distant church spires provides a sense of stillness, inviting the viewer to contemplate the quietude of the encounter. Nesterov avoids dramatic flair, opting instead for a contemplative mood that aligns with the Symbolist movement of the late nineteenth century. The work remains a significant example of Russian religious art, demonstrating the artist's ability to integrate folklore with traditional iconography. It is currently held in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
