Vincent van Gogh's "The Waiting Room (at Saint-Paul Hospital)" captures a scene within the asylum at Saint-Rémy, depicting patients in a moment of quiet contemplation with loose brushstrokes and a muted palette.
This watercolour and ink drawing by Vincent van Gogh depicts a group of patients in the waiting room at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy, France. Van Gogh voluntarily admitted himself to the asylum in May 1889, seeking treatment for his mental health. During his stay, he was allowed to paint and draw, producing some of his most celebrated works, alongside images of the hospital and its occupants. The composition shows five figures seated along a bench, their faces obscured or turned away from the viewer. The figures are rendered with loose, expressive brushstrokes and a muted colour palette of browns, ochres, and blacks. The light from a window illuminates the scene, casting shadows and adding depth to the composition. The overall effect is one of quiet contemplation and introspection, reflecting the artist's own state of mind during this period of his life. Van Gogh's ability to capture the human condition, even in the most challenging of circumstances, is evident in this poignant work.
